Our Principles

While there is no simple definition of “proper” journalism, L.A. Reported was built to be independent, nonpartisan, and immune to ideological capture from either side. Reporters and editors are asked to endorse and adhere to a short statement of principles. Those principles include:

  • Good reporting starts with humility, curiosity, and an open mind.
  • Good journalism never pursues a predetermined conclusion.
  • Finding and telling true stories — whatever that truth turns out to be — benefits the residents of Los Angeles.
  • Good writing doesn’t tell; it shows.
  • The best journalism surprises.
