Our Mission

L.A. Reported is an experiment built on a contrarian hypothesis: that a local newsroom can succeed by doing the opposite of what most news sites do.

For decades, news sites have profited by prioritizing quantity over quality, clickbait over original reporting, bullet points over narrative storytelling. We see an opportunity to do better.

L.A. Reported distinguishes itself as much by what it won’t do as by what it will. We don’t participate in the culture wars — on either side — and we don’t chase clicks. Instead, we break local news stories that would otherwise go uncovered and unnoticed.

While our primary platform is Substack, we borrow elements from 20th-century magazines, including rigorous fact-checking and deeply reported stories that both inform and delight readers.
