Waymo taxis, way fewer accidents
By Sarah Silbert
How many life-changing injuries have robot chauffeurs prevented in Los Angeles? About eight.
Pity the poor robots. Headlines highlight their every mishap: the time last year when one of Waymo’s AI-driven cars mindlessly drove a passenger into an active high-risk felony arrest scene in downtown L.A., or this January, when a Waymo hit a child near an elementary school in Santa Monica.
What doesn’t make news: all the times the robots get it right. To be fair, that’s because there’s no way to say precisely how many accidents would have happened in a Waymo-less world, let alone exactly how many trips to the hospital or the morgue those hypothetical accidents would have caused.
